MEET PAT

Pat Brethour,

Registered Psychotherapist, MA.

Additional certifications in Addiction and Trauma

Registration #008732

If you are feeling lost, stuck, in despair or suffering from low self-esteem, trauma, addiction or co-occurring disorders, I’m here to help you. As a Registered Psychotherapist with a master’s degree in counselling and spirituality, and additional certifications in trauma and addictions counselling, I offer a compassionate, non-judgmental and safe environment in which to address your struggles and explore avenues for change and personal growth.

I understand the pain you are in as I have struggled myself. My own journey in recovery has led me to choose to help others move forward to a more positive way of being.

If you find yourself hampered in your present life by past issues or events, or if you want to address issues relating to trauma, feelings of being stuck or lost, low self-esteem or loss of motivation, I can help.

My approach to addiction is to recognize your addiction as a disease – essentially your substance of choice has hijacked your brain. I believe that addiction is also a symptom of unresolved issues from the past, typically trauma or family disfunction in childhood. Unless the underlying issues that led to addiction are addressed, relapse usually occurs. I use a combination of therapeutic approaches to help you find freedom from both your addiction and your past.

Research shows that the most important factor in positive therapy outcomes is a strong therapeutic relationship. As such, I prioritize building strong connections. You are the expert in your life. My role is to help you to navigate whatever challenges life has thrown your way, to help you reclaim your life from things like: trauma, panic attacks, health anxiety, symptoms of OCD, depression, stress & or burnout. These issues have a way of hooking us and carrying us away from what matter most to us. Our work will focus on helping you to get engaged again with the things that matter most to YOU.

My therapy practice supports adults across the life span. I offer alternative perspectives & actively help clients to learn tools to manage their symptoms through the use of evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) including Exposure & Response Prevention for OCD and Prolonged Exposure treatment for PTSD, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mind-body therapies & compassion-focused approaches.

I believe below the surface of our struggles there is a beautiful vibrant soul that sometimes gets hampered by our pain. Starting therapy with someone new isn’t easy at a time when you are often not feeling your best–my goal is to make this process as painless as possible to help get you on a path to feeling better! Reach out to book a free 30 min. consultation to see if my practice might be a good fit for your goals.

I believe that we have the power to heal ourselves and therapy can guide our way. I help to empower clients to better understand their challenges, helping to create a healthier and more meaningful life.

My previous background in social work and now as a mental health therapist has encompassed working with individuals from ages 16 to 65+.with varying mental health issues. My counselling services provide guidance and support for individuals with issues related to anxiety & stress; depression & loneliness; childhood trauma; life transitions; low self-esteem, and workplace challenges.

I value the importance of early relationships and experiences that have helped shape and create our ways of coping and navigating life. In therapy, we might find it useful to identify your unique experiences and use those places to explore your narrative and seek resolution. Together, we will work to identify patterns; strengthen awareness, and build on communication and confidence. Additionally, we will explore various coping mechanisms that resonate with you and strategies to learn, understand, and better manage your emotions.

I endeavour to help you to discover the roots of your problems in pursuit of a meaningful outcome – desired change, a new life direction, clarity/understanding, and focus. When we take the time to listen to ourselves, we can then begin to heal.
